Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Insurance with no eligibility period!

05 Jan 2017

Here at Lightblueonline we are looking out for the best Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Insurance policies in the market so that when we talk to you and build up a picture of your needs and circumstances we know where in the market we can get you a policy that WILL pay out.

Looking for such a policy on your own requires reading all the terms and conditions as well as the small print. If you don’t then you cannot be certain that when you need the income it will be there for you.

Internet Insurance is a minefield and as they said on The Real Hustle: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!”. For example, you might take an accident and sickness policy out today and think you are covered immediately, but there will be a deferred period before you can claim and the longer that deferred period the cheaper the policy. For unemployment cover it’s even worse as there’s the possibility that there is an eligibility period of up to 120 days before you can make a claim! So you think you’ve got a great deal – which you have if nothing happens for a few months – if it’s any sooner then you’ve wasted your money and worse still you have no income whilst you are out of work.

So, it’s always a good idea to speak to a professional, someone who knows these policies inside and out. Someone who has a personal connection with the insurers and are instantly aware of what’s happening, who the good, the bad and the ugly are.

For example, today we learn that one insurer has just launched a short-term (i.e. pays out for 12 months) income protection insurance product (accident, sickness and unemployment) that has no eligibility period as well as  requiring GP rather than Consultant sign-off for the accident & sickness element of the cover.

This removes the need for those signed off sick having to wait months for a consultant appointment, when their GP could confirm the illness.

It’s a great policy widely available to those between 18 and 55 working for more than 16 hours per week (or 70 hours per month) who have been permanently employed for 12 months with no serious medical conditions.

The policy’s maximum benefit is 60% of your gross income at the start of the policy or £2,000, payable for 12 months, if you are unable to work for 30 days consecutively due to an accident, sickness, involuntary redundancy or carer duties. In case of critical illness, they will also pay you a single payment of £2,500 for qualifying conditions upon receipt of a doctor’s diagnosis.
